The goal of the Fishpond (loko i'a) project was to create local on-island capacity building through training and education to enable the Molokai community to reuse their fishponds in the most productive and appropriate manner. The fishpond project has trained Molokai youth in fishpond restoration techniques, aquaculture methods, water quality assessment, leadership and business training. The trainees have restored Kahinapohaku, Honouliwai, Ualapue fishponds and are successfully practicing aquaculture. An operations base has been established at Keawanui, a magnificent 72-acre fishpond. Aside from creating awareness and rejuvenating the practice of aquaculture on Molokai, the project has created statewide interest in the proper reuse of fishponds.

Reason for Need
Farmed ocean products, including fish, seaweed and shellfish, command a premium price on the world market. Molokai has great potential to become a leader in this industry if it can strengthen its aquaculture infrastructure. Restoration of the 50+ ocean fishponds that circle Molokai's southern shore, the creation of an aquaculture institute, and creation of an aquaculture cooperative will enable Molokai to expand its aquaculture industry.
.
