Reason for Need
Our ocean, streams and water supply resources are threatened by soil and wind erosion, and by the destruction of our native forest watersheds. Vegetative cover, native tree windbreaks, and revegetation of the watershed areas are needed to minimize these problems. The plant nursery on island cannot provide the necessary plant materials to meet the demand. Native plants are also highly marketable, due to the federally sponsored reforestation of the island of Kaho'olawe, and the state's requirement that native plants be used in public landscaping. The opportunity exists to expand a newly created non-profit nursery on Molokai for production of plant materials for environmental conservation and to provide economic opportunities for families.
